Step one in starting a website is purchasing your domain name and server space. It's important that you take charge of this task yourself rather than leaving it up to a 3rd party website company or designer.
The person who purchases your domain name is listed in the essential registrar information and this cannot be changed without a good deal of trouble. It's best if the company who owns the domain be named as registrar as well as contact, etc.
As well, notices are sent out when the domain is ready to be renewed. If you are not the registrar, you may not get these notices. If the registrar has moved, changed his email or even passed away, you may never be able to recover your domain name.
If you purchase your own domain names, you will retain control.
Similar issues are of concern with your hosting space. Hosts need to invoice and be paid on a regular basis. It's your choice whether you pay monthly, quarterly or annually - see below for rates. If you are the original leasee of the hosts server space, you will be able to make your own arrangements with the host and be in charge of its service.
Webmasters will come and go. But your domain and your host server will be with you for a long time.

All servers experience down time now and then. It's part of doing business on the internet. Most businesses don't even notice. However, if your business relies on a constant flow of email, or if you're in the middle of a tournament and are displaying results, or in the middle of some other major project that relies on your website, you may want to consider purchasing the extra server as a kind of insurance.
